FREE KIDS MOVIE: The Palace Theatre’s Summer in the City Movie Series, presented by Broadview Federal Credit Union, offers free, family-friendly movies to children and families from neighborhoods around the Palace in downtown Albany, with targeted outreach to low-income and underserved families in the City. For each show, doors open at Noon with educational activities provided by Whitney Young Health Center, Ten Broeck Mansion, and other local partnering organizations. Movies begin at 1 pm. We can’t tell you the name of the movie due to copyright restrictions, but we can say that it stars Tom Hanks and is based on the book titled “A Man Called Ove.” Join us at the Lansingburgh branch of the Troy Public Library on August 29 at 4:30 p.m. for a screening. The first 20 people to register for the movie will receive a free copy of the book. The movie is rated PG-13. Bring your own snacks. This in-person event is free and open to the public. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. LEARN TO PAINT WITH WATERCOLOR: Join the library for a series of watercolor workshops where participants will work on seasonal landscapes under the direction of local artist Emma Rinaldi. We will be starting with a flower field, moving on to a sunny mountainscape, and finishing with an ocean view. Whether you are familiar with watercolor or have never used the medium before, all are welcome to attend. Materials will be provided. Participants can come to as many or few workshops as they choose (registration for each class is separate). The first workshop will be held on June 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library, the second workshop will be held on July 26 at 3:00 p.m. at the Lansingburgh Branch, and the third workshop will be held on August 30 at 2:00 p.m. at the Main Library. In part 1 on September 7, 2-3:30 p.m., we will cover document basics, how to format documents, how to insert special characters, use footnotes, and page numbers, and check spelling and grammar. In part 2 on September 14, 2-3:30 p.m., we will learn how to create columns and tables, insert and format pictures, create and use text boxes, how to manage watermarks, and how to use (and delete) page and line breaks. Laptops will be provided to all participants. Registration for each class is separate, participants can come to one or both classes as they choose. GARAGE SALE PREVIEW: The Woman’s Club of Albany will open the doors of its historic home for a “super” garage sale on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 8-9. The event will take place at 725 Madison Ave., Albany, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special preview sale will be held on Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for an entry fee of $5. Proceeds from the event benefit The Woman’s Club, a non-profit organization founded in 1910 to improve conditions for women and children in Albany. The sale will feature a wide variety of vintage and new donated items, including furniture, small appliances, jewelry, glassware, linens, toys and books, new and “newish” fall and winter women’s and men’s clothing, coats and shoes and baby and children’s things. There also will be a raffle of gift baskets. Public donations of clean, intact items for the sale will be accepted on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. and on Wednesday, Sept. 6, from 10 a.m. to 6.p.m. at the WCA. No bowling balls, car seats, electronics, fish tanks, bedding, mattresses, exercise equipment or skis will be accepted.

SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. READ AND HIKE BOOK CLUB: Starting from the Eldridge Research Center,284 Pond Hill Road, Rensselaerville. 3-4:30 pm. This event runs rain or shine. PADDLE TRIP: 10 am during the Tugboat Roundup in Waterford. Join other paddlers and kayakers as they paddle the Waterford Flight, a series of locks with the highest elevation (169 feet) in the shortest distance in the US. Enter the canal at Lock 6 and finish the journey exiting Lock 2 in the heart of Tugboat Roundup. Don’t miss this opportunity for an up close on the water look tugs big and small.

HISTORICAL DISCUSSION: The Saratoga County History Center will host David Brooks (Education Director at Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site) on Wednesday, September 13th from 7pm to 8:30pm. The presentation will be held in the Long Room at Brookside Museum, 21 Fairground Ave Ballston Spa. Mr. Brooks will be discussing the “Iron Hearted Regiment”, the 115th New York Infantry. TIFFANY WINDOWS TOUR: The Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway will be hosting a tour of Tiffany stained glass windows in Troy the morning of Sept. 16. Participants will learn about Louis Comfort Tiffany, and then visit five sites to view examples of his work. The tour cost is $25. Reservations and advance payment are required. LEARN ABOUT BEAVERS: At the Eldridge Research Center, 284 Pond Hill Road, Rensselaerville. 1-2:30pm. Meet at the Eldridge Research Center for a reading of “Beaver and Otter Get Along… Sort Of” and a drawing activity with illustrator Meg Sodano. Learn about the special adaptations beavers have and how their behaviors impact the ecosystem. Weather permitting, following the indoor activity we will head outside for a hike around Lincoln Pond (0.8 miles, at a leisurely walking pace) to see beaver lodges and other signs of our resident beavers.Appropriate for children ages 6 and up. SNEAKER FUNDRAISER: Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 510 Albany Shaker Road Loudonville, will be having an Athletic Sneaker Fundraiser on Saturday September 16th and 23rd from 9 am to 1 pm. We will be collecting sneakers in all conditions – excellent, slightly used, old and worn or new ones that just don’t fit. Donate these sneakers to a fundraiser that has a Global Impact! The sneakers that are in good condition are refurbished and provided to people worldwide who don’t own shoes, those in poor condition are recycled into products such as playground cushion material. Russ Vandervoort, Waterford Town Historian will lead a walking tour of downtown Waterford, describing local landmarks and influential residents who lived there in the mid-19th century.
